Kneaded eraser changes it's density when it's stretched out. why?

if you have a kneaded eraser try to stretch it out then touch the stretched part, you'll notice that it's very soft and malleable compared to the rest which is very firm. why is this? i find it fascinating i messed with this stuff all day and it's still so cool to play around with
